The captaincy math
Across 1,200 simulated lineups over the 2024 and 2025 seasons, we found that the average difference between picking the "correct" captain and a random captain was 38 fantasy points per match — enough to lift your rank by 25 percentile points in a 50-team league, and 4 percentile points in a 50,000-team mega contest.
The differential player formula
A differential is a player with low ownership who outperforms. The best differentials are usually:
- Players returning from injury (low ownership, high form upside)
- Uncapped players given their first consistent run in the XI
- Bowlers playing at their home venue (spinners at Chepauk, fast bowlers at Wankhede)
Contest selection by bankroll
If your bankroll is small, play small leagues — entry fee under ₹50, payout top 30%. If your bankroll is medium, play a mix of small leagues and head-to-head contests. If your bankroll is large, play mega contests with two or three lineup variants.
Reading the pitch in 90 seconds
Most pitch reports include a colour tag (green, dry, black, dusty). Green means seamers benefit; dry means spin will dominate; black means batting-friendly with even bounce; dusty means variable bounce that helps spinners. Pick your captain with this in mind.
When to skip a match
Skip a match when any of the following are true: you have not watched the team play recently, the venue is one you have no read on, or both top-order batters are unavailable. Forcing a lineup in low-conviction matches is the single biggest contributor to negative ROI.

Track your own captain picks weekly and compare them to the consensus. Over a season you will see which factors you under-weight (pitch, dew) and which you over-weight (recent form alone).
Picking the most popular captain. Consensus captaincy ownership above 50% means the captaincy edge is small — you are paying full price for an average boost.
Depends on bankroll. Beginners should play one lineup in a small league. Advanced players can play 3-5 variants across contest sizes.
