The IPL player market runs deep — about 200 players are signed across the ten franchises, with another 60-80 names competing for replacement spots. Below is how our editorial team thinks about the player pool when building fantasy lineups.

Role categories and what they mean for points
Every player in the IPL fantasy pool is sorted into one of four role categories. Each role scores points slightly differently, and understanding the categories helps you pick a balanced XI.
| Role | Primary contribution | Typical points / match | Captain multiplier sweet spot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wicket-keeper batter | Runs + dismissals | 35 – 60 | When top of batting order |
| Top-order batter | Runs, fours and sixes | 40 – 75 | Always — captain most matches |
| Middle-order batter | Runs in pressure | 30 – 55 | When promoted up the order |
| All-rounder (pace) | Batting + seam wickets | 45 – 80 | Yes — premium captaincy choice |
| All-rounder (spin) | Batting + spin wickets | 40 – 75 | On spin-friendly pitches |
| Specialist fast bowler | Wickets + dot balls | 35 – 65 | In high-scoring venues |
| Specialist spinner | Wickets + economy | 30 – 60 | On slow pitches |
How to find differential picks
Differential means low ownership across the field. The standard approach is to scan the player pool for names with selection percentage under 8% who are likely to play and in form. The IPL Live Fantasy app surfaces this data on every player card.
Reading recent form
Recent form matters more than career average for fantasy purposes. A batter averaging 25 in his last five innings is a stronger captain pick than one averaging 45 career but only 18 in his last five. We track the previous-five-innings rolling average on every player card.
Frequently asked questions
Consistency in captain picks depends on venue, opposition and recent form. Across recent seasons, top-order batters who bat through the innings have been the most reliable captain picks, with all-rounders second.
Uncapped players are good differential picks because they carry low ownership. They are higher variance — but if they break through, they can lift your rank significantly. Read the impact-substitute rules for each season.
Recent form (last 5 innings or last 5 overs bowled) is a stronger predictor of next-match fantasy points than career average. Use career average only to confirm a player is consistently good.
